Special Relationship Gallery

2026 marks the 10th anniversary of the Brexit referendum.

It also marks the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence.

The concept of “Global Britain” is a central feature of Brexit. So if we get space, we aim to include a key aspect – a gallery dedicated to exploring the lofty peaks and troughs of the UK-US “Special Relationship” across the centuries.

There is a lot of mythology around it – indeed some even question if it still exists. But it has undoubtedly been the most important bilateral alliance in modern history.

By exploring the ups and downs of the past but also what it today delivers in practice, we can also get a better understanding of today’s reality – the costs and the benefits, the opportunities and the risks.

But importantly, we also establish a hub.

The Gallery can become a place which helps reinforce UK-US relations, where visiting academics can lecture on their own findings and historians can launch their new books.

Above all though it creates an obvious draw and a natural home for American statesmen to visit, and where they feel encouraged to come to make a speech on their own vision for the alliance.
